What is Cambio?

Cambio is a marketplace that lets you the consumer pick the price that you would like to pay. Have you ever thought to yourself: "I'd eat at that restaurant, but only if it was cheaper?" Now you can! When you post your price you are telling the business, "This is what I would pay for your product." Businesses can then see the price you are willing to pay. If they think the price is fair, Cambio will email you a confirmation e-mail. At that time you purchase the voucher using paypal.

Cambio is also Spanish for exchange or change (as in money). Yes, this is how we picked the company name.

What's a Cambio Voucher?

A Cambio voucher is a lot like a gift card. A $50 Cambio voucher is valid for $50 worth of a business' goods. If you buy a $50 Cambio voucher for only $30, then you just saved $20!

Does this work like an auction site?

Not really. Auction sites have a limited time frame and when that time is up the highest bidder wins. Cambio is an exchange, there is no time limit. Instead, your bid becomes a standing offer anytime the business chooses to accept it. Who knows, maybe the business will sell, maybe they won't -- only the business can decide.

Can I use Cambio for free?

YES! Cambio is completely free to consumers.

How do I know if my price is too high or too low?

Each business will decide if they are going to accept or decline your bid. The "Chances of Winning" next to your bid will show you if your bid has a better chance of winning by comparing it to other bids that have been entered in the Cambio system.

Can I bid a ridiculously low price? For example: $3 for a $25 gift card?

Sure. You can pick any price you want for your bid. Businesses can accept any price they want to sell for. So while it's very unlikely a business will sell to you at a ridiculously low price like $3, there's nothing stopping you.

Does a business have to accept my bid?

No. Each business has control on deciding if they will accept your bid. Cambio does not require businesses to accept any bids.

How many bids will the business accept?

It is up to the business how many offers they have available for bidders. Cambio does not restrict businesses to the number of bids they are allowed to accept.

What is the Buy!t button?

Businesses post their offers at a discounted price. If you like the offer and want to purchase it immediately, you can by clicking Buy!t.

The first Battle of Flowers

By 1890, San Antonio, Texas, was a thriving trade center with population of 38,000. In 1891 a group of citizens decided to honor the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto with a Battle of Flowers.

The first parade had horse-drawn carriages, bicycles decorated with fresh flowers and floats carrying children dressed as flowers. The Belknap Rifles represented the military. The participants pelted each other with blossoms.

The Battle of Flowers Parade is the only one in the country to be planned and directed completely by women. Today it's the largest parade in Fiesta. It's second in size nationally only to the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Fiesta becomes a San Antonio tradition

The Battle of Flowers was an immediate success. Within a few years, more events were taking place on or near April 21 a carnival, balls and coronations of royalty. The Fiesta tradition had been born. Other early events included street dancing, children's fetes, a Trades Display Parade and an orphans party. Fiesta has taken place every year except for 1918 during World War I and 1942 through 1945.

The Order of the Alamo

In 1909 John Carrington founded the Order of the Alamo, one of the oldest Fiesta organizations. The members meet once a year to choose the next year's queen and her court. The queen's court includes a princess, 12 in-town duchesses and 12 from out of town. This royalty is featured in the major Fiesta parades.

Claire Driscoll, patron of the Alamo, was the only person to serve as Queen of Fiesta for three years - 1904, 1905 and 1906. Since then queens have served for only one year. Many people have speculated about the value of the elegant gowns worn by the queen and her court. Members of the Order say the costs are determined between the families and their dressmakers. So figures of $10,000 or more are just guesses by people admiring the beautiful dresses and trains.

The Texas Cavaliers

Over the early years Fiesta royalty included King Cotton, King Selamat (tamales spelled backwards), King Omala (Alamo spelled backwards) and King Antonio. Some years no king was named.

John Carrington formed the Texas Cavaliers in 1926. One purpose of the organization was to select King Antonio. The first Cavaliers king was Sterling Burke, crowned King Antonio IX in 1927.

The Pilgrimage to the Alamo

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas has staged its Pilgrimage to the Alamo since 1925. The pilgrimage is a memorial tribute to the Alamo heroes and the heritage of Texas. A solemn, wreath-bearing procession of historic, civic, patriotic, military and school groups walks silently to the Alamo. At the same time, an announcer intones the names of the Alamo defenders from within the Alamo walls. The ceremony concludes with a brief memorial service.

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade

For years King Antonio had no set tradition for his official arrival at Fiesta. He used planes, trains and automobiles. When the Works Progress Administration completed improvements to the San Antonio River in 1941, the Cavaliers decided to introduce the king in a river parade - the first event to take place on the river after the improvements.

Today the River Parade is one of the few in the nation in which the floats really do float. About 250,000 people line the banks to enjoy the event.

El Rey Feo

The second king to reign over Fiesta is El Rey Feo, the "Ugly King". This monarch comes from a medieval tradition in which peasants elected one of their own as king for a day. The first Rey Feo was crowned in 1947. He became an official part of Fiesta in 1980.

The LULAC Rey Feo Scholarship Committee sponsors El Rey Feo. Candidates for the title raise money that's given to students for their college expenses.

The emergence of two Fiesta kings built a bridge between both of the city's major cultures. Both kings visit hospitals, schools and nursing homes in addition to making their appearance at Fiesta events.

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade began in 1948. The parade's name comes from the French word for a candlestick or torch. In the event's early years, four-man brigades marched between the other units, carrying torches on five-foot poles. Today Boy Scouts carry safety flares. All the floats in the Flambeau Parade are lighted.

Night in Old San Antonio

A Night in Old San Antonio, better known as NIOSA, joined Fiesta in 1948. The San Antonio Conservation Society sponsors NIOSA. The society works to save San Antonio buildings and maintain the city's cultural heritage. It takes about 16,000 volunteers each year to stage NIOSA.

Other events

Fiesta has grown over the years to a 10-day celebration featuring some 100 events that feature music, food, sports, pageantry, military and patriotic observances, exhibits, and parades. Nonprofit organizations sponsor every activity. The festival has an economic impact of nearly $284 million on the city of San Antonio.

Past Fiestas have featured regattas, synchronized swimming, polo matches, a hot-air balloon race, rifle competitions and bowling tournaments. Long-time traditions include:

Cornyation, a raucous show lampooning San Antonio headlines and personalities.
St. Mary's Oyster Bake, two days of food (including 100,000 oysters) and live music on the St. Mary's University campus. Oyster Bake has been a San Antonio tradition for more than 90 years.
The Women's Fiesta Soccer Tournament, an invitational tournament featuring top teams from around the nation.

Each year the Fiesta San Antonio Commission accepts several new nonprofit organizations as members sponsoring official Fiesta events.

Other royalty

Over the years the number of Fiesta royalty fluctuated. Today, in addition to the big three, the list includes:

Miss Fiesta San Antonio. She dates back to 1949 in conjunction with the Flambeau Parade. Today the Miss Fiesta Scholarship Pageant makes its selection from among San Antonio college students.
The Queen of Soul. The goal of the San Antonio Queen of Soul Inc. is to provide a representative of the African American community at Fiesta activities and other civic and community programs.
Miss San Antonio. College students compete for this title. The winner represents San Antonio in the Miss Texas Pageant in Fort Worth in July.
The Charro Queen. She represents the San Antonio Charro Association, a San Antonio tradition since 1947. A Day in Old Mexico and the Charreada trace their history back to 1550s Mexico.
The Reina de la Feria de las Flores. Like Rey Feo, this queen earns her crown by raising funds for the Rey Feo Scholarship Committee.. The first reina was chosen in 1947 along with the first Ugly King.
The Fiesta Teen Queen. The more than 100-year-old Woman's Club of San Antonio chooses its Teen Queen from among area high schoolers. Children of club members participate in the Teenage Coronation Court during Fiesta.

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission

With the immediate popularity of the grandmother of Fiesta events the Battle of Flowers Parade and other early activities, Fiesta soon needed someone to coordinate the festival. The Spring Carnival Association was established in 1906 to organize the festival. Some years later the Fiesta San Jacinto Association took over Fiesta responsibilities.

Even parties can have disagreements. In the 1950s dissatisfaction grew among many Fiesta organizations over Fiesta San Jacinto Association operations. In 1959 those groups withdrew from the association and formed a new one the FiestaÃ�Â® San Antonio Commission.

The commission is an independent nonprofit organization. It has grown from a membership of 11 organizations to 100. The commission is led by a volunteer committee that includes members of Fiesta organizations and community leaders. It has a small full-time staff, seasonal employees and volunteers.

The commission works year-round to manage the thousands of details and day-to-day tasks essential to planning and executing the huge citywide celebration. It also acts as liaison between its nonprofit members, local military activities and city departments.

The commission provides funds for Fiesta events that are not financially self-supporting. The organization itself is funded entirely by the private sector and receives no direct city or other public funding. It relies heavily on membership dues, corporate partnerships, carnival income and licensed merchandise sales.

12/28/2011 - A Legend is Born on the Texas Gulf Coast

Groomer Seafood History

Our story begins in Port Isabel, Texas in the late 1800s when Great Grandfather Bernardo Perez fished the Lower Laguna Madre. Bernardo would take his schooner out into the bay, spread his nets across the water, pull them in by hand and catch fish native to the Texas Gulf Coast: Redfish, Drum, Flounder and Speckled Trout. Most of his catch was sold to the local population, thus the start of our family in the seafood business.

Bernardo was the father of eight children, one of which was Hortensia Perez, our grandmother. While Bernardo and his sons, Rodolfo and Noberto, made a living fishing the Texas Gulf Coast, Hortensia grew up and married George Groomer, a mechanic from Missouri, who was working on the construction of the jettys in South Padre Island. During this time, Port Isabel grew from a small obscure fishing village to a veritable hotspot for recreational fishing and became home to the largest shrimping fleet in the nation. In fact, locals refer to this time as the a Golden Age of Port Isabel.

Hortensia and George had two sons, George Jr. and Gilbert, our dad. Unfortunately, George Groomer died when his sons were still very young. Their uncle Rodolfo became a father figure to the boys and was especially close to Gilbert, teaching him to fish the flats of the Lower Laguna Madre just as his father had taught him. By the age of 22, Gilbert owned ten fishing boats and was selling his catch to Gavito's Seafood and Pace Seafood out of Brownsville. He would often transport his fish to Magnolia Seafood House in Houston, where he got 10 to 25 cents per pound for the fish.

At the same time Gilbert was becoming a skilled fisherman, our maternal step-grandfather, Jake Jenkins, was an oil wildcatter in Oklahoma. The story goes that during a late night poker game, one of the players ran out of money and placed a shrimp boat located in Port Isabel as collateral. Jake won this hand with the ace of diamonds. Finding himself the proud owner of a shrimp boat, Jake moved his family to Port Isabel to try his hand at shrimping on his new boat which he christened The Ace of Diamonds.

These two seafood families united when Gilbert Groomer wed Jake's eldest stepdaughter in 1950. This union produced four sons who grew up in the seafood industry. Gilbert Groomer formed a new company called Groomer & Sons Seafood that sold fresh and frozen seafood in the Port Isabel / Harlingen area.

Tough economic times hit the Rio Grande Valley during the late seventies and early eighties. We knew that we would be forced out of business unless we made changes. It was at this time that we got a new vision of the seafood industry and what our company could accomplish.

We changed our name to Groomer Seafood and moved from South Texas to San Antonio, in 1982. We would be centrally located and could supply seafood across the state of Texas. We became the Federal Express of seafood. If a restaurant wanted product, our goal was to have it to them within hours of their order. We spread our operations across the state and eventually had facilities in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Port Isabel.

By 1993, we realized that we could not sustain all these warehouse locations and consolidated our operations to the central location in San Antonio. We built a custom 20,000 square foot facility that is totally temperature controlled. This facility allows us to offer the freshest and most diverse selection of seafood in the state as well as competitive pricing and year round availability.

ItÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s time for the next Iron Bartender Live Competition in San Antonio. Bartenders are chosen based on their creativity, gourmet design and qualities of a master mixoligist. The bartenders represent some of the most premier bars in the area and collectively have spent hundreds of hours behind the bar inventing and experimenting with flavors.

Bartenders will have 15 minutes to make 15 drinks. In each match, the bartenders will make the following drinks for 3 different judges. ALL drinks are to be made with a secret liquor.

Bartenders will be judged on speed, accuracy, originality.

Professional Bartending School of San Antonio has been training and placing San Antonio's best bartenders since 1997. A little history on our school; our original location was on the northeast side, Austin Highway and Perrin-Beitel. In 2007 we moved our current location on Cherry Ridge across from Embassy Suites. My father, Larry Stratton, purchased the school in 1999. As with many businesses, the schools previous owners had no clue how to run a successful school. Larry's 40 years of bartending experience would be extremely useful in the coming years. I, Rachel Burdett, came on board in 2000. My father and I have had successful businesses together in the past and we were ready for the next challenge.

I had just recently moved from Houston, where I was bartending at Carrabba's. We immediately started making changes to the school. The school was cleaned and remodeled. We also added to the existing textbook, as it was only 45 pages??? I mean come on...students are paying good money to learn to bartend!

In 2005 we were approached by Professional Bartending Schools of America. PBSA is the nation's largest, premier group of state licensed bartending schools. If its happening in the industry PBSA knows about it. As a result of our meeting we changed the name of our school to Professional Bartending School of San Antonio(old name Texas School of B@!#$*%!@#). We also immediately became full pledged members. PBSA has a copyrighted textbook, as well as, great job placement assistance programs. After all, isn't that why you attend school...to get the greatest amount of knowledge, and get a great job?? We think so.

Since 2005 Professional Bartending School of San Antonio has been growing by leaps and bounds. In 2010 we wrote our own textbook. I like to keep them updated when new products come out. San Antonio bartending school has also been forming very strong partnerships with various organizations in the local community: San Antonio Restaurant Association, Aloha Point of Sale Systems, Glazer Distributing, Republic Distributing, Iron Bartender Live, and SanAntonioNight.com to name a few.

We have recently added touch screen cash registers to our school.

Located in Helotes, TX, for over 60 years, John T. Floore Country Store has hosted Texas and American music legends alike. This quintessential Texas Honky Tonk has hosted such legendary performers as Willie Nelson, Bob Willis, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, B.B. King, Little Richard and many many more.

Opened in 1942 by Mr. John T. Floore, himself, Floore Country Store was not a store at all, but a unique Texas Dance Hall and CafÃ�Â©. Floore is famous for their tamales and homemade bread, but also offers a complete menu of Texas Cafe style food, ice cold beer and a truly unique Texas atmosphere.

Floore's Country Store is known as the birthplace of Willie Nelson. John T. Floore and Willie Nelson were partners in the original Willie Nelson Music Company. In the March 2001 issue of Texas Monthly, John T. Floore Country Store was listed as one of the 50 Things Every Texan Should Do.

You will find Floore's in Helotes, Tx, just north of 1604 on Highway 16, where people still wave to you as they pass you on the road and gentlemen still tip their hats to the ladies while they hold doors open when you walk into a store.

One of my favorite things about Floore Country Store is this. Cheap concert ticket prices and every Sunday is family friendly dance night, the way it used to be 20 years ago. Floore's boasts a music experience that supersedes all the big venues by bringing in amazing talent; yet providing an environment that makes you feel like you are hosting a jam session in your own backyard. You are bound to find an incredible music act in this small town music venue including Kevin Fowler, Cory Morrow, Gary Allan, Gary P. Nunn, Reckless Kelly, Brandon Rhyder and many more, but act fast, tickets sell out fast due to the demand of this concert experience.

I promise you this, once you see a show at Floore Country Store, you will be addicted and find yourself constantly checking their calendar for the next concert you just have to experience.

Gruene Hall - Down home Texas Dance Hall

Built in 1878, and located in the historical town of Gruene, Texas (now part of New Braunfels), Gruene Hall proclaims itself as the oldest continually running dance hall in Texas, and the Central Texas birthplace to many great songwriters and musicians. Many well known artists got their start at Gruene Hall including George Strait, Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bruce and Charlie Robison, and many more. Gruene Hall has hosted acts such as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Gregg Allman and every summer is the location of Roger Creager's Birthday Bash. Gruene Hall was also used as a set for Michael, starring John Travolta.

Part of what makes Gruene Hall truly unique is that it has been under the proprietorship of Pat Molak and co-owner Mary Jane Nalley for over 35 years, with Tracie Ferguson as their sole booking agent for over 30 years. Tracie is credited with starting the original music approach that has made Gruene Hall an iconic music venue.

Not only does has Gruene Hall have a spacious hard wood dance floor, they have recently included the addition of plentiful outdoor seating that is perfect with Gruene Hall's open air floor plan, so you will never miss a song, even if you are sitting outside. Acoustics are perfect, staff is small town friendly and you will always be able to get up close and personal to your favorite bands. No velvet ropes, long wait lines or security keeping you 5 feet from the stage.

There may be no indoor AC, and they only serve beer, but if you love live music and great venues, Gruene Hall is a must visit at least once in your life. Walking in will take you back years with their small town hospitality and charm. I personally would plan ahead and check their calendar schedule. Gruene Hall is known to sell out for most concerts due to their strong reputation and small capacity limits, but in my opinion, it is well worth it. You will walk away with life long memories of an experience that is hard to find with any other concert venue.
