Description:
Have yourself a seat and let me tell you about Betty's Battalion
a soldiers Home-Away-From-Home....
Betty first opened her bar December 9, 1985 on a San Antonio street that had been home to dozens of bars during the Vietnam War. She knew she would be catering mainly to soldiers who came to Fort Sam Houston, Texas for medical training. Initially, it just seemed to be mostly soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division who were TDY from Fort Bragg; Hence the 82nd patch painted outside the door to the club.
But the bar was soon discovered by Special Forces soldiers attending the SOMED SGT's course (18D).
Betty came to form a personal relationship with the Special Operations community.
She and her bar were quickly adopted as one of their own and to this day, there are Green Beret and Ranger medics, and SEAL corpsman out there in the far reaches of the world, that know of Betty's Battalion, either personally or by word-of-mouth.
That doesn't mean that the rest of the members of the military aren't special to her. The bar was named for the rest of her friends in the Army and Navy. As Betty always says "This isn't my bar. I'm here to open the door. It belongs to the troops. They made it what it is."
